Every time I’d feel ’sick’ when I was younger, my dad would say “it’s all in your mind.” Little did he know the ‘truth’ behind his comment. We’ve all heard those urban legends of the mom picking up a car off a baby or seen David Blaine hold his breath for over 15 minutes. But the question is: can ‘we’ all do those things? Are ’super-powers’ some form of untapped innate programming that we have yet to embrace as reality? If this does in fact exist, can we all learn how to harness these powers to our benefit, in particular healing. Read the rest of this entry »

One of the latests phenomena to sweep the US and other countries has been the movie/documentary “The Secret.” Produced by Rhonda Byrne, the movie features various self-help teachers who focus on the Law of Attraction. The law basically states:
What ever you focus on will manifest in reality
The first time I watched this film was after being introduced to it at a seminar I attended. It intrigued me that someone made a movie about how we think and the outcomes we produce. I thought it was spot on and the way it was presented allowed the average person to “get it.”
The Secret, however, has taken many hits from opponents stating that the Law of Attraction is just another self-help marketing gimmick. Others claim that it’s just “hocus pocus.” Little do they know, but there has been on going scientific research on this topic for decades. Particularly in the field of neurology & neurophysiology.
The Science behind “The Secret”
Although the movie may have a “new agey” feel to it, there is solid science behind what they’re saying. The mere fact of focusing on something will bring you to a heightened awareness of it. Stop right now and think about your breathing pattern. Go ahead and stop. What did you notice? Probably you stopped your normal pattern or you had to take in a deep breath.
Most people live unconsciously, which is a good thing in most cases. You wouldn’t want to have to think about breathing or beating your heart would you? But it does translate into other things like life. We get caught up in our day to day actions and float along like a feather in the wind (Forest Gump reference).
There’s a neurobiological and quantum physics explanation for the Law of Attraction.
Neurobiological Explanation: the mere fact of focusing on something activates what’s called the “Reticular Activating System.” Essentially you enter into a state of heightened awareness. By bringing the unconscious into the conscious you have control over it. Your physiology will be aligned to accomplish what you’re thinking about.
Quantum Physics Explanation: all thoughts are essentially vibrations, thus the reason for P.E.T. scans. When your brain experiences different thought processes, different portions of the brain will appear active upon a P.E.T. scan. Then by the process of “resonance” you will attract that which has the same vibratory frequency.

The first time I heard of the concept that ‘thoughts become things’ was by Dr. Wayne Dyer. Actually, the exact words were “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change.” Funny thing is Wayne Dyer’s book was referred to my husband and I during a marriage councilors appointment. Looking back now I couldn’t even tell you why we weren’t getting along. But the first ah-ha moment came when I realized I had all the power to start a war and all the power to end a war in my marriage – and it all began with a thought.
Since then, I’ve taken this advice into many areas of my life. First of all, I stopped complaining. If I didn’t have any thing nice to say then I said nothing at all. This wasn’t easy at first, but you just ‘fake it until you make it’ until it is a natural reaction. My new response to anything I disagreed with became “Is that so?” or “Geez, I’ve never considered that before, please tell me more.” Basically, I removed my EGO (Edging God Out) from the equation. I would constantly remind myself that I would rather be kind than be right.
I also decided to stop judging others. Now, this was easier said than done. However, with daily practice it becomes more of a natural reaction to situations I would have been quickly offended to in the past. The biggest awakening in this lesson was realizing that when I judged another, I wasn’t defining them – I was actually defining myself as someone who needed to judge. Most importantly, whatever I was judging someone about, it was actually something I despised about myself. When I stopped judging others, all of a sudden I could see humanity in a different light.
The most important element in managing my thoughts is the practice of daily meditation. Herman Melville once said, “God’s one and only voice is silence.” It has also been said the average person has 60,000 thoughts a day. Problem is most people have the same 60,000 thoughts every single day. With so much inner chatter going on, how can we ever have a moment of peace and quiet? The quote from the Bible “Be still and know that I am God” isn’t just a sweet little saying. If you want to have a connection with God, your Higher Source, Spirit, (or whatever word you use) you must find a way to still the mind.
You really can change your life, and it begins with just one thought. So chose your thoughts wisely and you’ll begin to see all the beauty that surrounds you.
I was fortunate enough to be mentored by Dr. Jeff Spencer (team chiropractor for the US Postal Cycling Team and Lance Armstrong). At a seminar Dr. Spencer shared a story about Lance and how he made it through his bout with cancer. Dr. Spencer asked Lance how he was able to overcome cancer and then go on to win 7 consecutive Tour de France? Lance said, “When you get a second chance at life you go all the way.” A simple answer with huge implications.
I thought about that statement and asked myself “am I going all the way?” Do I live everyday like it’s my last? At that moment in time, I wasn’t. Many people go through life living each day just getting by. I hear complaints that we’re in a recession, people are losing their homes and gas prices are too high. And I have to agree with those things on one level. But looking at it from the bigger picture, those things really don’t matter. If you knew that you only had one day left, what would you do? Would you do the things that you’re doing today? Would you have the same attitudes that you have today? (A good movie to watch is Last Holiday starring Queen Latifah)
Why is it that we as a human culture live our lives hoping for things to get better and then when it’s too late, wish we did the things that truly brought us happiness? It seems as if we search for happiness in external sources when true happiness comes from internal sources. During each leg of the Tour de France, Lance had only one competitor – himself. He knew that if he could out-do his own performance, he would be successful regardless of how the race turned out. I often catch myself comparing my accomplishments to others. But what I’ve learned from Lance and Eckhart Tolle’s book “A New Earth” is that the reason for acting that way is due to EGO stepping in.
Why wait till you get a second chance at life to start living it? Live the life you have right now to the fullest – go all the way. What are your thoughts?
Growing up I’ve always had a keen sense of how a person is feeling at that very instant even if they didn’t express it vocally. It was something that I could just “sense.” Then as I grew older and began my Velocity Wellness Center, I began to see that how a person was feeling emotionally really affected how they were functioning physically. What I noticed on almost every patient was that their health problems were due to some unresolved emotional incident. A mentor once reminded me of a Woody Allen quote, “I won’t get angry, I’ll just grow a tumor!”
One particular patient comes to mind when I think about repressed emotions and how it was affecting her physical health (she will remain anonymous). She came into my office with complaints ranging from abnormal rashes on her face to insomnia and fatigue. You could tell that something was weighing down upon her shoulders. She just didn’t have that spark of life. After a few sessions with moderate results I turned the focus to looking at “unresolved feelings of anger and resentment.” She was shocked at how past emotional events can stick around and cause physical problems. After discovering specific emotional traumas and bringing them to her conscious mind, we were able to help her release those repressed emotions. Tears were shed and she began to share more information. I knew she was beginning to truly heal as you could hear it in her v oice.
A few days later she returned and told me that after she left, she began to relive those past events but was now at a state of “okay-ness.” (A state of “okay-ness” means that you are neutral to the situation and happens when you truly forgive and let go). She said:
“Dr. Mike, I now understand that all those things that happened to me in the past is just that. THE PAST and I will not let it determine my PRESENT. I’ve been living too long in the shadows of other’s insecurities and I thought that they were my insecurities. I feel free now!”
She has gone on to discover new relationships and opportunities that bring her limitless joy and happiness. And when things don’t seem to go her way, she now has a solid foundation to know that ‘all is well.’
I’ve learned from my patients and in my personal life that once you truly forgive you immediately detach your link to holding on to those repressed emotions. You release that emotional baggage and you can begin to heal. Suppressed emotions have to manifest in one way or another, either physically or emotionally. So it’s time to do some spring cleaning and get rid of that unwanted emotional baggage. I highly recommend everyone to read Eckhart Tolle’s new book “A New Earth: Awakening to your Life’s purpose” to get a sense of becoming who you are meant to be. Emotional baggage does not serve you. It only keeps you from progressing. And guess what? You have all the ability to let go of that emotional baggage. You have your own doctor within you. Let it go and become the great person you are meant to be.
