Eat Your Way to a Healthier Heart

With our need to be constantly on the move in our society, certain aspects of a healthy lifestyle tend to fall to the wayside. Eating is one of those things that tends to take a back burner to convenience, ultimately adding pounds and a buildup of preservatives that harm our bodies more than we realize. There are a handful of things that can be added to your regular diet that will ultimately improve your health, especially the health of your heart.

Eat your way to a healthier heart with some or all of the following items.

Spinach

Spinach is a great leafy green that can be added to many dishes and has a great flavor. Rather than using lettuce, which has little nutritional value, spinach is a wonderful substitute that contains iron, folate, phytochemicals, and other minerals. The benefits of spinach are many, including heart disease prevention, eyesight preservation, and improved overall health.

Oatmeal

Whole oats have been the cornerstone of nutritious breakfasts for many years. The fiber in a bowl of whole oatmeal can help keep your stomach full for longer and helps reduce overall cholesterol levels. Oatmeal, especially when fruit is added is a wonderful heart healthy way to start your say.

Salmon

Besides the high levels of protein found in salmon, omega-3 fatty acids can also be found. Both of these are essential to a healthy heart and salmon is versatile and easy to cook. Whether you like it smoked, broiled, or baked salmon is a great food that offers health benefits far beyond the heart.

Blueberries

Blueberries are one superfood that can be used in a wide variety of ways that will give you a great dose of antioxidants with every bite. Blueberries can be added to oatmeal, whole grain cereals, salads, smoothies, and much more. Start using this year-fruit fruit in your daily diet and reap the health benefits for your heart and beyond.

Soy

This is another great item that is full of vitamins, fiber and minerals. A great alternative to meat, poultry, or fish, many vegetarians love soy products like tofu because they take on the flavors and characters of the dishes they are put in. Raw soy beans, known as edamame, are a great natural source of the minerals and fiber that all people seem to enjoy.

[display_podcast]

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. and one of the first symptoms of a heart attack is death. In this podcast we talk about one of the silent killers: Homocysteine. Excess homocysteine has become one of the leading risk factors for heart disease. According to Challem & Dolby (1996) 40% of all heart attacks and strokes are attributed to elevated levels of homocysteine.

What are normal levels of plasma concentrations? (These are the values you get on lab testing) 4.9 – 11.7 micromoles/liter

As you can see in this diagram, in order for your body to properly metabolize Homocysteine, there needs to be an adequate supply of the following vitamins & “co-factors”:

Folate

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B6

Trimethylglycine

Dimethylglycine

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Vitamin E

Molybdenum

Essential Co-factors: Zinc, Selenium, Magnesium

The average American diet is highly deficient in the optimal amounts of these vitamins and minerals to effectively help the properly metabolize homocysteine.

Excess homocysteine generates free radicals and causes the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Homocysteine also injures the inner walls of the arteries causing micro “nicks.” Oxidized LDL cholesterol is the major contributor to plaque formation in the arteries. These plaque formations occur as a result of the nicks formed on the inner walls of the arteries. (Sort of like your body’s own Band-aid).

The cholesterol based plaque formation leads to atherosclerosis which will eventually lead to cardiovascular disease.

Action steps to Wellness:

Decrease your intake of Red Meats (don’t cut it out totally, because you need at least 6-9 oz of red meat per week). But red meats are one of the richest sources of methionine, which is the precursor to homocysteine.

Supplement your diet with the vitamins and minerals that help to metabolize excess homocysteine. I highly recommend a good multivitamin (email me for my recommendations)

Fats…who you callin’ fat?

The main component that stands out in this diet is the high consumption of fats. Now you may be saying “hold on there, why would I want to eat more fats? I don’t want to get fat!” Well, they’re eating foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Western diets are typically high in omega-6 fatty acids (which leads to increased inflammation). Diets high in omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory.

Wine Consumption…eat, drink and be merry!

Wine was a staple at every meal and had an added health benefit from the compounds found in grapes called proanthocyanidins. (Most commonly found in grape seed extract) These compounds are potent antioxidants which help to fight against oxidative damage due to free radicals.

Studies show that adherence to the Mediterranean diet will decrease morbidity. (What does that mean???) Well…first of all, you’ll increase your lifespan. Secondly you will increase your quality of life.

Link to 10 year morbidity study

What’s the bottom line???

If you want to increase the quality of your life (especially your health) try a diet that’s rich in whole fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, olive oil, wild fish rich in omega 3’s, take your time eating your food, chew thoroughly, sit down with good company, laugh and supplement your diet with proanthocyanidins (Proflavanol 90)

Recommended Supplements:

Remember…these symptoms are usually just indicators that there’s something going on with your cardiovascular system and that they have to be totally “unexplained” for you to begin thinking about a heart attack.

Anytime you begin to experience chest discomfort with difficulty breathing, do not wait to have it checked out by your physician. If it is too severe for you to wait to see your physician, call 9-1-1.

I recently read a journal review article about the differences between various Omega-3 fatty acid supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids come from triglycerides. Basically what I learned was that triglycerides (which are mostly derived from fish) goes through a purification process that removes the fatty acids from it’s glycerol backbone. These become free-fatty acids. Then to stabilize these free-fatty acids, they are joined to either “ethanol” (known as ethyl-esters) or back to a “glycerol backbone” (known as re-esterified Triglycerides).

The interesting finding from this article was that they studied the bioavailability of the two different forms of these fish oils (ethyl-esters vs. re-esterified triglycerides). Re-esterified triglycerides showed increased bioavailability in comparison to the ethyl-ester form.

The question then becomes…what form is your fish oil in? Ethyl-ester (EE) or Re-esterified Triglyceride (r-TG)?

So why are so many people taking fish oil supplements? I found an article that gives a brief synopsis of the benefits of fish oil.
